iPhone Grading Explained: What A, B, and C Grades Actually Mean
"Grade A" sounds simple until you're comparing it across three different suppliers and getting three different definitions. Grading systems aren't standardized industry-wide, which means the same letter can mean different things depending on who's selling. Here's exactly what our grading scale checks, so you know what you're buying before stock arrives.
Why Grading Matters More Than the Word "Used"
A phone being "used" tells you almost nothing about its condition — it could mean barely touched or heavily worn. Grading replaces that ambiguity with a checked, consistent standard applied to every unit individually, not estimated from a sample.
The Grade Breakdown
A+ / A
Minimal to no visible wear. Screen free of scratches visible at normal viewing distance. Housing shows no dents or significant scuffing. Battery health verified at the top of our accepted range. This is the grade closest to "looks new."
A-
Light wear visible on close inspection — minor scuffs on the housing, possibly a very light screen mark. Fully functional, battery health within accepted range. The kind of wear you'd expect from light use rather than mishandling.
B / B+
Visible wear — scratches on the screen or housing that are noticeable but don't affect function. Battery health checked and disclosed, may sit lower in the acceptable range. Fully functional across all tested points.
C / C+
Heavier cosmetic wear — deeper scratches, more visible housing damage. Still fully functional and tested; the grade reflects appearance, not performance. Often the best value tier for resellers targeting budget-conscious buyers.
What Gets Checked at Every Grade
Regardless of cosmetic grade, every unit goes through the same functional checks:
- Battery health verified and disclosed
- Screen function (touch response, display issues like burn-in or dead pixels)
- Camera function (front and rear)
- Buttons, ports, and charging
- Cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity
- Factory reset and account removal confirmed
Cosmetic grade and functional pass are two separate checks — a C-grade phone passes the same functional bar as an A+ phone. The grade only tells you what it looks like, not whether it works.
Why This Matters for Your Resale Pricing
Once you know exactly what each grade includes, pricing your own resale listings gets easier. You're not guessing how a "used" phone will look when it arrives — you're pricing against a known, disclosed condition. That consistency is also what reduces returns and disputes from your own buyers.
FAQ
What's the difference between A and A+ grade?
Both represent minimal wear; A+ is the top of that range with effectively no visible marks, while A may have the faintest signs of light handling.
Does cosmetic grade affect battery health?
No — battery health is checked and disclosed separately from cosmetic grade. A C-grade phone can have strong battery health, and an A-grade phone can sit lower in the range.
Is a B-grade phone fully functional?
Yes. All grades pass the same functional testing. Grade reflects cosmetic condition only.
