Overview
What This Index Is
The SmartChoice EU iPhone Wholesale Price Index tracks quarterly price movements for used iPhones in the European B2B wholesale market. It covers the iPhone models that move in meaningful volume through our inventory — iPhone 13 through the current generation — broken down by condition grade.
The index publishes trend data, not absolute prices. Each figure tells you whether prices are rising or falling, and by how much, relative to the base quarter. This is enough information to benchmark market direction without exposing the transactional prices we negotiate with individual buyers.
The index lives at a permanent URL updated each quarter — not a new page per period — so links accumulate to one destination rather than fragmenting across dated posts.
Data is from our own stock — not a market survey. Figures are derived from actual wholesale transactions at SmartChoice. They reflect the direction of our price points, not a composite of the broader market. This makes the index narrower in scope than a multi-supplier survey, but grounded in real transactions rather than estimates.
Methodology
Methodology
The index is compiled from SmartChoice stock and sales records exported from Directo at the end of each quarter. The methodology is fixed so results are comparable quarter to quarter.
Why index numbers instead of prices
We publish index numbers and percentage changes rather than absolute EUR prices. This is a deliberate choice, not missing data. Publishing transactional prices would expose the price points we negotiate individually with B2B buyers and hand competitors a live benchmarking tool. Index values give the market the trend information that is useful for analysis — whether prices are rising, falling, and by how much — without disclosing the underlying figures. Raw EUR medians are computed internally and discarded; they do not appear in the page, in the schema markup, or in any JSON the browser loads.
- 1
Source data
Confirmed EU B2B wholesale transactions from SmartChoice inventory records for the preceding quarter. Retail-to-consumer sales are excluded. Prices used internally are in EUR, exclusive of VAT.
- 2
Minimum unit threshold
A model-grade combination must have at least 5 units in a quarter to appear. Fewer units produce an unreliable median. Cells below the threshold are shown as — rather than zero.
- 3
Internal metric
The median transaction price is computed for each model-grade-quarter combination. The median is more resistant to outlier lots than the mean. This figure is used only to derive the index values below — it is not published.
- 4
Index construction
Q1 2026 is the single shared base quarter for every row in this index (index = 100). A model-grade combination is included only if it reached the 5-unit threshold in Q1 2026. Subsequent quarters show price movement relative to that fixed base: a value of 94 means 6% below Q1 2026 for that model and grade. A dash in a later quarter means fewer than 5 units that period, not that the model is excluded.
- 5
Grade definitions
Grades follow the SmartChoice grading standard — A/A+ (near new, ≥85% battery), A- (light visible wear, ≥82%), B/B+ (visible wear, ≥78%), C/C+ (noticeable wear, ≥73%). All units are 100% functional.
- 6
Update cadence
Updated quarterly — Q1 data published in April, Q2 in July, Q3 in October, Q4 in January. The "Latest data" label in the header and the schema dateModified field reflect the data period, not the deployment date.
What this index does not cover
- Absolute prices — only indexed movements and percentage changes.
- Model-grade combinations with fewer than 5 units in a quarter.
- Retail or B2C sales — EU B2B wholesale only.
- Non-EU shipments — UK, Norway, Switzerland excluded.
- Accessories, spare parts, or lot premiums.
- Samsung — volume in the Q1 2026 base quarter was too low to index. Samsung coverage is planned for a future edition once a usable baseline period exists.

Index Table by Model and Grade
Index value (base quarter = 100) and quarter-on-quarter change. A cell marked — has fewer than 5 units and is excluded from that period.

Grade spread
Grade Price Spread
The relative price gap between grades is as commercially important as absolute price direction. The table below shows how much more the A/A+ grade commands over B/B+ and C/C+, expressed as a percentage. A figure of 18% means A/A+ stock costs 18% more than B/B+ stock for the same model in the same quarter.
These spreads are computed from the same internal medians that feed the index table. Only the percentage relationship is published — no EUR amounts.

How to use the spread data
If your resale channel rewards cosmetic condition — Back Market top-tier, in-store retail, corporate fleet buyers — compare the A/A+ premium percentage against the additional margin you recover at resale. If the wholesale premium is smaller than the resale uplift, the higher grade pays for itself.
In price-led markets — Eastern European platforms, repair shops, export buyers — the B/B+ to C/C+ gap is the more useful figure. It tells you what cosmetic quality you are buying with each step up the grade ladder.
Guide
How to Read This Data
Index values, not prices
The base quarter sets every cell to 100. A value of 94 means that grade and model is trading 6% below the base period. A value of 103 means 3% above. You cannot infer the actual price from the index value — that is by design.
QoQ is the quarter-on-quarter change
The QoQ figure shows how much the index moved from the previous quarter to the current one. A −3% QoQ on an index value of 94 means prices fell a further 3% from the prior quarter — they did not fall 3% from the base. The base quarter column shows “base” instead of a QoQ figure because there is no prior quarter to compare against.
A/A+ shares one column
The index groups A and A+ because the wholesale step between them is small relative to other grade differences, and separating them in many quarters would produce cells with fewer than 5 units and therefore no publishable figure. The grading guide covers when the A+ premium is worth paying at resale.
A dash means excluded, not zero
A — in a cell means fewer than 5 units of that model-grade combination in that quarter, so no reliable median could be computed. It does not mean the price was zero or that no units existed. C/C+ iPhone Pro models are commonly excluded because that grade is scarce in EU supply for high-end Apple devices.
This is not a live price list
The index reflects completed transactions in a past quarter. Current prices depend on current stock, which rotates continuously. For current pricing on available units, see the live stock list or contact us for a quote.
